  19. <p>     If Bill Clinton wants his top officials to be, in Dwight
  20. Eisenhower's famous words, "clean as a hound's tooth," he'd
  21. better start handing out the toothpaste.

  23. <p>     A little slow on the ethical uptake
  24. </p>
  25. <p>     Commerce Secretary-designate Ronald Brown was all set to
  26. be the guest of honor at a lavish Kennedy Center gala for which a
  27. group of corporations were reportedly asked to ante up $10,000
  28. apiece. Among them were Anheuser-Busch, J.C. Penney and
  29. PepsiCo. Brown apparently failed to see any prospective conflict
  30. of interest, until the press and Clinton himself thought
  31. otherwise. Brown canceled out.

  33. <p>     Never ask a lawyer for legal advice
  34. </p>
  35. <p>     Zoe Baird, Attorney General-designate of all things, had
  36. employed two undocumented Peruvian aliens as household workers
  37. and failed to pay Social Security taxes on their salaries. To
  38. her credit, Baird disclosed this to Clinton before her
  39. appointment and to the FBI during its investigation. Her husband
  40. Paul Gewirtz, a Yale law professor, blamed the mess on bad legal
  41. advice, and the couple paid nearly $16,000 in taxes, penalties
  42. and interest.
